Pamisos (river)

Pamisos
Origin Messinia prefecture
Mouth Ionian Sea
Length approx. 50 km

The Pamisos (Greek: Πάμισος) is a river that flows entirely in the Messenia prefecture of the southern Peloponnese in Greece.

Geography

The river flows from Mount Lykaio to the north in a rocky area filled with grasslands, scrubland and the occasional tree, while a number of villages lie within the riverine area. Since 2001, the GR-7 runs on the east side of the valley and southward along its entire length. From its source in the Pamisos plain, it runs beneath the GR-9A (E55) and through the towns of Zevgolateio, Meligalas, Eva and Aris where the dam which helps irrigate a large part of the Messenian plain is located. It then flows east of modern Messene as well as the GR-82 and further south empties into the Ionian Sea via the Messenian Gulf.
